Junshi Murakami

Harp

Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Junshi Murakami has been living in Ireland since 1999. He studied the harp with Áine Ní Dhubhghaill at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where he was awarded a Diploma in Irish Harp performance in 2005. This is his ninth year at the Kingston Academy.

Junshi has been involved in a number of events and recordings in Ireland, Denmark, Italy and Japan, including a critically acclaimed debut album from Lisa O'Neill, Lisa O'Neill has an Album (2009) and performances at the Dun Laoghaire Festival of World Culture and Electric Picnic. He is widely regarded as one of the finest harpists currently working in Ireland.

Junshi's arrangements of traditional Irish tunes can be found in the compilation Rhogha na gCruitiri (Cáirde na Cruite 2010), which are included in the RIAM syllabus for Irish harp examination. In 2013, he released an album with the legendary Kerry accordion/concertina player Máire Úna Ní Bheaglaoich, Ceol Uisce, which topped the Japanese folk music chart in the Irish Music Magazine.

In recent years Junshi has written two books about the Irish harp that have been published in Japan and has organised an acclaimed festival of Irish harp music in Tokyo.
